Architectural vs. 3-Tab Shingles: Which Is Right for Your Roof?
When you replace your roof, one of the choices you'll make is the type of shingle. The two main options are architectural (dimensional) shingles and traditional 3-tab shingles.
3-Tab Shingles
3-tab shingles are flat, uniform and the most economical option. They've been the standard for decades but are increasingly being replaced by architectural shingles as the go-to choice.
Architectural Shingles
Architectural shingles, like GAF Timberline HDZ, are thicker, layered and dimensional, giving the roof a richer, more textured look. They're more durable, more wind-resistant, and carry longer warranties. For most New Jersey homes, they're the better long-term value.
Our Recommendation
For nearly all the roofs we install, we recommend architectural shingles. The improved durability, wind resistance and appearance are well worth it, and as a GAF-certified contractor we install genuine GAF architectural systems built for New Jersey weather.
